Research Interests

Cognitive and philosophical approaches to literature; textual representation of olfaction and gustation; animal minds in literature; literature and the emotions

Professor Wagschal's current research and teaching uses findings from Cognitive Science to explore literary, artistic and non-fictional texts. This type of investigation is becoming known as Cognitive Cultural Studies or Cognitive Historicism. He is particularly interested in sensory perception—especially olfaction and gustation—are how these are represented textually. Professor Wagschal is also interested in comparative cognition and what kinds of thought processes and communication strategies thinkers, especially in the Spanish Empire, attributed to various kinds of animals and what the ethical implications of these attributions have been.
